Wolves howling. Right time, right place. Coincidence.

It's a very long drive from Vancouver to Whitehorse, and it's not better in winter. This was the 3rd day, having left from Fort Nelson, northern BC, around 7 a.m. And got a flat somewhere hours before Toad Mountain. They patched the bad tire (folks--get winter tires in winter in snow country), but shouldn't have, and I had to use that mini-spare for a further 7 hours. So this sunset stop took some self-control, as I had to stay at 80 kmh, max. Didn't want to stop. This was a 9-hour driving day by this point, and Watson Lake was a long ways away.

But then I heard the wolves, just howling I guess with the sunset. Maybe they'd just had a kill and a rest, or maybe they were off on an late day hunt, anticipating the darkness. Who knows? Just funny I stopped there. Semi pic is nice, too.

  • Nice to be at one with nature :-)

  • @TheWaverleys Oh good...was worried it'd be another "Oh god, evil wolves" comment. Thanks for that. I can't vouch for it, but last night someone downtown here in Whitehorse said they saw a wolf--and I think it's true, because he said it was "very, very, very big." Can't have been a coyote or any normal dog.

  • I'd be shitting myself with fear. I live in southern ontario, and we're surrounded by woods with coyotes.

  • @kjun13 nothing to fear when one's car is idling right beside you! But almost never have wolves attacked a person. Wolves need to be left alone to survive. Coyotes are bigger in Ontario than the Yukon, where they're quite slight and tiny--not much bigger than a fox, which in turn is not that much bigger than a big housecat. Right now the gov't wants to consult how to limit the wolf population, and I think if folks stopped hunting so damned many moose, the wolves would have a fair chance.

  • Sounds like beautiful, haunting music. I've always wanted to go to the Yukon; now I feel I've seen a little bit of it. Thanks for posting this!

  • @CitynCountry I'd like to hear wolves more often. Too bad so many fear them or try to kill them, as in those reintroduced ones in Idaho, Wyoming, etc. Theres a fantastic book on the ocean wolves of the BC coast—unlike mainland wolves they live on sea creatures. Ian McAllister might be the authoramazing.
