The Battle of China(1944) was the sixth film of Frank Capra's Why We Fight propaganda film series. It describes the modern history of China, with the founding of the Republic of China by Sun Yat-sen, and leads on to the Japanese invasion. The invasion of China is explained in terms of the four-step plan for Japanese conquest, mentioned in the Tanaka Memorial.
"Here was their mad dream. Phase One - the occupation of Manchuria for raw materials. Phase Two - the absorption of China for manpower. Phase Three - a triumphant sweep to the south to seize the riches of the Indies. Phase Four - the eastward move to crush the United States.".
Special attention is paid to Japanese atrocities such as the bombing of Shanghai and the Nanking Massacre -- the film includes graphic film footage of the Nanking atrocities. The film mentions a Nanking massacre death toll of 40,000 -- far lower than modern estimates; the true death toll was unknown at the time.
The mass westward migration associated with the moving of the Chinese capital to chochung, and the construction of the Burma road are also covered, and the film concludes with overview of the Chinese victory at the Battle of Changsha.
The Chinese communists are never explicitly mentioned, but are implicitly acknowledged with a discussion of Chinese guerrilla warfare behind the Japanese lines.
The introductory maps shown in the film show China as including Outer Mongolia andTanna Tuva, as they are, to this day, constitutionally claimed by the Republic of China, but not claimed by present-day People's Republic of China.

  • I'm finding all of these videos facinating. My maternal Grandfather was part of the International Safety Zone in Nanking. He was a Methodist Missionary there. We have all of his letters and in 2012 for any Japanese to say that the Rape of Nanking didn't happen is like saying that man didn't go to the Moon!

  • @kaito8209 also, you fail to understand the conventions of just war.

you constantly attempt to disprove the nanjing massacre when footage evidence was presented.

you constantly attempt to disprove it through only japanese evidence. yet even some japanese sources confirm the nanjing massacre.

you constantly attempt to justify japan's actions, yet they clearly fail in the "Just War" conventions. last resort? just cause? right intention?

spare me and spare yourself from your lies.

  • @kaito8209 you resort to evidence disproving the nanking massacre. that is all you do. it proves that you know absolutely nothing about the war and you demonstrate strong patriotic views for japan. all your evidence are based from japanese sources, and all of mine are based off chinese, english and even european sources. your view is narrow.

i will repeat this again because you fail to understand this point.

the chinese didn't step on japan. japan stepped on china.

  • @kaito8209 again, you fail to understand my point. look where your sources are from. japan! the japanese would naturally create their own evidence to say the massacre is wrong.

and you do not get it. why were the japanese in manchuria? why were the japanese EVEN IN CHINA? to take pictures? give me a break.

the war started because the japanese were at china and the IJA launched attack after attack because the chinese accepted unfair treaties where japan gets land for nothing in return.

  • @jlqt5

The Japanese, American, British, and French militaries were in Shanghai.. Not only Japanese. Japanese Military Personnel were attacked by Chinese. That is why we fought back. That is why the war started.
