The point is that you don't get infected only by downloading a file. This is just one of the possible channels. A virus may be on a pendrive, on a CD (even original ones sometimes!), or may be injected after a BOF has been produced by an attacker or a worm, and so on.

You evidently ignore the varied kind of security flows that allow sometimes to execute stuff you didn't click for. You HAVE to use an antivirus (esp. on win).

Kaspersky is the best, but NOD32 isn´t so bad either the only difference is that kaspersky has better rating in findig viruses but it is a little slower than NOD32.
