@damienmetalwind Too bad the rest of the members all got their act together and formed Megafaun, who is relatively successful (and who actually performs occasionally with Justin), and Justin's Bon Iver project doesn't survive purely on the mythology of how it was recorded -- it's just damn good. In the end, no one cares about sordid details because all of their music is genuine and enjoyable. We're here to listen to music, not speculate or judge character choices. People move on. You should too.
@sarijoul Whatever Carolina it was, he abandoned them and left them in debt to his dad, without a way to tour to pay the money back. That's all I'm saying...he hung them out to dry.
And I know a lot of people these days who are friends with Justin because they think he can help their career...maybe that's what's going on.
this show was an early first date with my now fiance. one of the better shows i've seen.
and it's good to see that justin, phil, brad and joe are playing together again (if only at sxsw and occasional gayngs perfs). megafaun and bon iver are better than DYE was -- at least the original material. DYE was GREAT at covers. I remember fondly a cover of "stop breathin'" by Pavement in Durham some time around the bickett show.
From what I heard, Justin was just frustrated with a lot of things at once. He got dumped, got mono, and was tired of touring for pennies. I heard the band was sick of him and vice versa--it happens a lot.
In the end, he lost it, and he basically said "Fuck this, I'm going home." His band needed him to finish the tour so they could get out of debt, but he said "That's your problem" and went to his dad's cabin for a break. The band wanted nothing to do with him after that.
I grew up in Eau Claire, where he's from. Friends of mine in the music scene there talk about what he did. It was the precursor to his running to the cabin and recording 'For Emma.' People always start the story with his artsy retreat to the cabin, but they never talk about how he hung his band out to dry and left them in debt to his father.
How many songs were on this album? Can't find any information on it anywhere..
