One of the main objectives of imperialism and colonialism was to exploit the colonies and their inhabitants to generate economic wealth for the mother country and her corporations. As a result, large numbers of people were forced into slavery or the system of indentured laborers, and vast areas of natural habitats were cleared and converted to monocultural plantations.

Another impact of imperialism was the export of Western values - resource exploitation, consumerism and materialism to the colonies. In the meantime, the Enlightenment began to shift West societies towards values such as democracy, independent judiciary, free press and escape from religious tyranny. These, when well developed offer checks and balances against excessive concentration of power and corruption, and some safeguards against environmental predation.

After the colonies gained independence, the newly independent citizens uncritically embraced most of the negative values and have vigorously continued the practices of their early colonial masters.

One man who fought against the blind adoption of materialistic values was of course Gandhi. Alas, no one can be a prophet in his own land.

As a result, in the former colonies, the environment, especially natural habitats and their species, is being destroyed at a scale that is unprecedented in history.

@Thedarksecret1 No, I'm not saying they're predisposed to violence. I think all races can easily match each other in there use of violence. I am saying that I think something about them has the exploration bug in them. I think its without doubt one of the reasons for their 'advancement'. They explore and have bared little shame in exploiting anything from art to natural resources. I don't think white people are any more 'evil' than anyone else though.  Perspective is what counts I suppose.

@Thedarksecret1 I don't know. I can't seem to stay in one place either. Maybe that is something about white people. I believe in genetic and culture having strong impact on disposition in many ways.  I don't have any evidence to back that claim of movement/exploration/conquerin­g. White people have also tortured each other as much if not more than other races. So, you know I highly doubt it is anything racist on their part. Anyways, I understand your point and they're still bringing in labor

@underself Yeah, but if you look at history the only race that refused to stick to their place of origin were white people. It was the white people, during the Age of Discovery, that ventured to other territories and resided their (i.e Australia, Africa, the New World, Asia, etc). It wasn't black people that moved voluntarily. Black people were stripped from their homeland and brought to American to work cheaply. I'm not trying to sound racist but history is history.

@Thedarksecret1 The idea I was referring to was the one about each race sticking to their place of origin. I don't actually think that's a horrible idea or necessarily racist, but I believe racists groups in the past have suggested the same thing although probably for different reasons. For a long time ever race did stick to their own territories and basically just conquered each other. Its no different now. The scale is just larger. It actually is just human nature and isn't about race.
