MASHPEE — Fire officials are crediting the fast action of boaters for possibly saving the lives of two young men injured in a personal watercraft collision yesterday afternoon on Wakeby Pond.

Two teenage boys were riding personal watercraft when they ran head first into one another at 6:30 p.m., Mashpee fire Capt. Joseph Fellows said.

The more seriously injured teen was taken by MedFlight helicopter to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston with a possible broken femur and a head injury, Fellows said.

The other young man was taken to Falmouth Hospital, he said.

Fire officials would not release the victims' names.

The teens were lucky that boaters nearby saw the collision, Fellows said. The good Samaritans were able to get the teens into their boat and call for help, he said.

Fellows said the young men were too injured to swim to shore on their own. Both were conscious and alert when the firefighters arrived, he added.

"The good part was someone was out there to help them," Fellows said. "We are very grateful to them."
