@Mandrake596 ...the chidori is converting chakra into lightning with little spacial manipulation, while there's no elemental manipulation in the rasengan, but the spacial manipulation is 10x more difficult than the chidori. The chidori is more used for piercing through one spot like a blade, while the rasengan damages a larger area, but it doesn't penetrate as deep as the chidori. We've seen what happens though when they collide in the Naruto vs Sasuke fights, they just cancel eachother out.
@Mandrake596 They're very different styles of jutsu, so I don't think you could say one is better than the other. The chidori's main element is speed; it's meant to convert one's arm into an unstoppable sword with so much precision and accuracy that it can only be used with the sharingan, while the rasengan was created based of the bijuu bomb, which is meant for pure destruction. I think they would use around the same amount of chakra, because the chidori is just converting lightning into...
@Mandrake596 No, only the Rasenshuriken can be thrown. However when Naruto is in his ninetails mode he can use a chakra arm to hold a rasengan and hit his opponent with it, so it's kind of like launching it.
True, but Chidori/Raikiri does not have shape manipulation like Rasengan does and Rasengan is self sustained. Chidori/Raikiri on the other hand consumes too much chakra because it cannot be maintained by itself.
Apparently Chidori/Raikiri can only be used a few times a day while Rasengan can be used as many times as they like as long as the user still has chakra. Thus, Chidori/Raikiri consumes more chakra compared to Rasengan.

@lukchardhsl it could also be the fact that naruto has tons more chakra than either sasuke or kakashi

This constantly repeating of "Rasengan!" is really getting on my nerves. "Believe it!" is waay better.
