You are actually making hydrogen gas only. The oxygen oxidized the aluminum, binded with it, and created the black waste product you saw in your solution - aluminum oxide. This is actually fortunate in your case. The oxygen, mixed with the hydrogen in the correct 1:2 ratio would have exploded violently, shattered the jar, and blasted your eardrums with a tremendous sound. Be safe now.

yep look for the oven cleaner that uses a good amount of sodium hydroxide... maybe there is a draino cleaner that uses the same thing..
but don't breath that stuff guys :)
