We added in too much Lye and had a tough time contain all the HHO that was being produced. We were not able to test fire in the bubbler because it would explode

  • Yes, you are breathing caustic fumes here. I bet you had some chemical rashes on your hands after this one.

    You are actually making hydrogen gas only. The oxygen oxidized the aluminum, binded with it, and created the black waste product you saw in your solution - aluminum oxide. This is actually fortunate in your case. The oxygen, mixed with the hydrogen in the correct 1:2 ratio would have exploded violently, shattered the jar, and blasted your eardrums with a tremendous sound. Be safe now.

    yep look for the oven cleaner that uses a good amount of sodium hydroxide... maybe there is a draino cleaner that uses the same thing..

    but don't breath that stuff guys :)
