Maria Callas as Medea 03

This is a slide show made with photographs of Maria Callas as Cherubini's Medea, one of her greatest roles. The photos are from Alexis Minotis's production, performed in Dallas (1958), London (1959), Epidaurus (1961) and Milan (1961 & 1962), where Jon Vickers was Giasone. The sound-track is from the studio recording made in 1957, with the Chorus and Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, directed by Tullio Serafin. Giasone is sung by Mirto Picchi. The pictures were chosen according to the text sung. If you like it, search for my other videos. This is the first dialogue between Medea and Giasone. In the recitative and in her first aria, Medea appeals to Giasone to remember all that she sacrificed for him in the past. In the ensuing duet (see my next video), Medea will pass from supplication to threat.

This is a killer aria, ... that ,.. I have yet to hear one singer do as well. They all sound like they are strangulating on it, because it sits high.. and requires legato and complete control of the sound.( you must be able to sing at all dynamic levels at all pitches .. This aria cannot be yelled.

Me too, the first time I heard her in the complete opera.. I was like, this is a major work, and Callas was so amazing, in the role.. she just drew you in.. There has no one to even come close to the way she did this role in the ensuing 60 yrs.

One of my favourite recordings of all time. From fierce to tender and back she just scares the hell out of you! And that entrance, the way she spits out "vil" in "E forse qui che il vil sicuro sta" my god she was sensational
