The Atari 800XL port of one of the most memorable 8bit platformers. This was the version I grew up with, and I was surprised how well I was able to play after all these years. I did know the game inside out, though. I've tried playing the BBC Micro version, and I'm not nearly as good. Incidentally, the game was also ported to the ST and Amiga, but while it had some nice music, it was much, much less playable than the 8bits. For shame.

  • can i get this game for xbox360? XD

  • Sadly, no! And it's not available for Virtual Console on the Wii yet either. Maybe one day.

  • This looks very different from the bbc one I remember! there are far more colours! I don't much like the sound fx, and the main character looks far too big to be worried about those birds!!

  • Yeah, there are a lot of aesthetic differences between this and the BBC/Spectrum versions. I generally prefer the feel of this version; those pseudo-3D platforms always remind me of my childhood!

  • Actually, I just looked at the ST version and I have to say, it's slightly better :), but then it was a far superior computer.

  • I played the ST version, and I have to say I didn't like it very much. The graphics were much nicer, and it had some sweet music, but the controls felt kind of sticky to me, and it was on the whole less forgiving, because the jumping seemed faster, making most jumps trickier.

  • Nah. BBC version is the best :)

  • @bobbystar101; matter of taste, I guess.

The BBC Micro was a fantastic machine in its day, and I'll always have a soft spot for it, but it was already old tech when I left school in the early 90s. I'd been *very* surprised when speaking to someone who'd just left school in 2000 who said they were still in use then (I think he said they were getting rid of them at that time).

But 2002? Seriously?! The technology would have been over 20 years old by that time- bordering on retro even then.

  • this is my childhood right here! thanks 4 uploading this!

  • @MrHeli Maybe not on Virtual Console, but you CAN play it on a Wii.

  • The birds look like Chocobos, from the Final Fantasy series. :/

  • @NotATube well its the simplicity I think.

I played a load of other platform games but this was just the most addictive.

The fact that in a school until 2002 (when I left) the BBC machines were always first to be booked by people wanting to play this (even though we had like 6 pentium 3's connected to the net and countless 486's with win3.1) probably vindicates that.

  • HUH

    ITS 3-D?

  • I prefer the BBC micro versions for very much the same reasons why you prefer this version. I think it all depends on which version that you play first. the very idea of being able to move an object on a screen was novel when I first played chuckie egg!!
