What vokes, what sincerety...the man was legendary. i always swore by Merle but vintage youtube is making me a JP believer, especially in the early seventies, before he got carried away with the phony powder. You just stand in awe listening to this man

Written by Jerry Williams, Jr. aka Swamp Dogg, a black soul musician, and originally recorded by another soul musician, Freddie North. When Paycheck's version reached #1 on the country charts and got nominated for a Grammy, Jerry Williams was initially invited to attend the ceremony as the songwriter, but when it was found out he was a black man, his invitation got cancelled. He jokingly says that "Charlie Pride's chair was already taken."

god blessed him with that great "country" voice.

Wonderful vintage performance.
He was a banty rooster with a hell of an attitude...
It was part of what is missing in country today....
REAL people.
REAL pain to sing about.
REAL mistakes and regrets.
Ya can't sing about it unless you live it......
the delivery is much better coming from him rather than Alan Jackson....Johnny is believable because he was REAL, and you just don't have much of that in C&W music anymore. Johnny was one of the best if you ask me!
