@Barilazar1eo He was both. He suffered from sever PTSD, but it just wasn't something talked about in those times. It was being weak, and when dudes couldn't hack it they were shamed. Ira was an American, and knew that the country needed him, regardless of the past, and it needed him bad. He was a hero and a wonderful Marine. If you read about him, he was a quiet and kind kid, not the type you think about becoming a Marine, but certainly the type you think about forgiving an old enemy.

ira seen all his friends killed then they took him off the front lines to sell war bonds instead of staying with his brothers in battle. that caused him to feel nothing but guilt. that caused him to drink so much.

here first treated like last
the creator sees this indeed
time has a pocket
were like the wounded black bear
he forgets them not
the wheel comes round again
he forgets not the ones

The only thing I dislike about this is it seems like it denotes Iras legacy, and the legacy of native americans. Is Ira really being remembered as a courageous individual or a drunk? This song makes me cry becuase of the outcome. What made him forgive the thieves who defiled his ancestors land, but walk among them, protecting them against their "invaders". I fear It's too late to ask him that question. I believe he was not only a fighter but a savior and protector blessing the battle grounds.
