In April of 2006 history was made when what is believed to be the very first Elephant to be killed with a crossbow in modern times was harvested in Zimbabwe on the eastern shores of Lake Kariba. Bill Troubridge, president of Excalibur Crossbow, took the mature bull Elephant with one arrow on the ninth day of a grueling hunt with PH Carl Mason of African Trails in the Omay tribal region of Zimbabwe. This area is home to one of the largest concentrations of Elephant in Southern Africa, and damage to the vegetation and local crops encourages herd reduction there through sport hunting. "Initially this hunt started out as a quest to demonstrate the effectiveness of our recurve limb crossbows" said Mr. Troubridge, "but it truly ended as a life altering experience". Over a hundred natives from nearby fishing village shared the bounty provided by almost 4000 pounds of boned meat from the downed bull.

  • Maybe you forget that before we had guns everyoe hunted with bows. Where do you live that you can't hunt deer with a bow? The reason most people use guns is that they don't want to actually hunt, they just want to kill things. Shooting a deer at 300+ yards is easy with a 30.06 and a scope.

  • imagine field dressing that thing..

  • Wow!

Taking the elephant down with just one bolt. I must say I'm both surprised and impressed.

  • That was awesome.

  • @y2kmx5 Damn, I wander how he drew the cord back!

  • ALL TREE LOVIN HATERS READ THE LAST PART OF THE DESCRIPTION

  • one crossbow bolt took an elephant? ...now thats impressive

  • Did you ever recover the bolt that got buried inside the elephant? I imagine that would make for a good trophy or keepsake, kind of like saving a lucky bullet shell.

  • This sort of hunting puts money in the local community, it's strictly regulated by wildlife officials, there is no way you can compare this to poaching! Elephants destroy farmland and they kill people every single year.

The only thing that made me have second thought about this hunt was the use of a crossbow. I now have no doubt that as long as the equipment is properly maintained and the hunter is aware of his limits and confident in his own skills, this hunting is both responsible and humane!

  • man one shot with a arrow !! great shooting>>>

  • this story was written in the latest south pacific bowhunter magizine in australia absolutely awsome read and to think they where charged by another elephant only a few days prior for no reason other then it was hormonally charged. absolutely brilliant great job and excelent shot

  • More people Ned to hunt with classic weapons these days. Its twice the rush and it helps to shut the hippies up. TERRIFIC SHOT THOUGH
