R.I.P. Chris Brooks 8/8/91-8/29/09
MIDDLEBORO - The sister of Christopher J. Brooks, 18, who died in a skateboarding accident Saturday night, said her brother loved hot dogs and his 5-year-old nephew, Michael.

He was a great kid, an athlete and loved being with family and friends, said Kim Briggs.

Brooks, who lived in the Middlebury Arms apartment complex, was killed while skateboarding Saturday night when he collided with a car just before midnight on Route 28.

The driver of the car, 16-year-old Jordan Layman of Middleboro, has not been charged.

As of Tuesday, the cause of the accident was still under investigation by officer Alan J. Cunningham.

On Tuesday evening, family and friends gathered to place a roadside memorial as the site on East Grove Street where Brooks died. Joseph McMahon, whose son died in December in a car crash, said the memorial will help the kids going through a hard time.

Brooks, who was to begin his senior year at Middleboro High School this year, was the son of Christopher Brooks of Dighton and Patricia Joy Briggs of Middleboro. He was on the football team and worked part-time at Stop & Shop supermarket. A trust fund, The CJ Memorial, has been set up at the Mayflower Cooperative Bank.

Briggs said her brother was an avid skateboarder, who went everywhere on his board.

The parents of two teenagers who were killed in December are reaching out to Brooks parents.

Joseph McMahon and Sherri A. DeYoung made the first contribution to a fund for the Brooks family because they both know what it is like to lose a child.

McMahons 17-year-old son, Brian, was killed in a car crash with his best friend, 18-year-old Joseph W. DeYoung.

The whole accident is tragic; the lives of both families are changed forever, McMahon said.

While roadside memorials are controversial, McMahon said the one on Purchase Street bearing his sons name brings comfort.
