The following video was shot using the latest Canon Full HD consumer camcorder my wife gave me as Christmas present last year, which is only 2 weeks ago. It was the first video I shot using the camcorders built-in flash memory because I was testing it right out of the box in the shop. After spending 2 weeks with it, I must say it is an amazing camcorder. It is light and compact in size. I carry it with me everyday. Compared with my other HD camcorders, it beats them in both performance and video quality. It starts up quickly and performs exceptionally well under low-light conditions. But, sadly, I just learned today Canon has announced a new model HF S10, at 2009 CES, which is due to release in February. It spots a bigger and faster lens, which generally translates into even better video quality under low-light situations. I might as well get my wife's money worth by embarking on a shooting spree in the coming weeks. Anyway, as the old saying goes in gadgetjunkie land, never trust an upgrade with your money that only has a minor upgrade in versioning. In this case, from HF10 to HF11.

  • WOW, The same thing happened to me, i got my HF11 this december. , but maybe the new hf s10's quality wont be a huge improvemet. Now, i did find the best quality settings for the HF11 put it in CINE mode. and set the custom color controls to Brightnes -1, Contrast +1, color +1, sharpness +1. video should have less blowouts and look very nice.

But who knows, maybe sony's new cam that has 2x the light sensitivity will beat the new canon...

  • Thank you or the settings tip. Videos I shot in the first week were all using standard settings. After first week, I began using CINE mode and 24P. I will give your recommendations a try.

I read about the Sony ones. But they are hard-disk based. My guess is, now that Samsung has released a 64GB camcorder, I think Canon will catch up before mid-year with a 64GB version as well in the form of HF S11.

I did only find out after I got the HF11 that the hard disk version comes with viewfinder.

  • it's definitely not RAW, I have an HF11 and the raw videos are crystal clear when I post strait to youtube... but when I first rendered my videos it had those lines in it, but I found out the problem, I needed to change the settings of my video editor, to edit 1440x1280 and then save as 1920x1280 or 1280x720

  • Maybe just needs de-interlacing applied to it in FCP, or Vegas...

  • Bad interlacing, what did you out put the file as? or is it just raw?
