'Rolling on the river' means he's on the boat and gains a love for the experience with the good people he meets along the way. 'Big wheel'- is the boats' rear sternwheel and Proud Mary is the name of the boat- 'keeps on burning'- it burned coal.

When I hear proud Mary I always remember this including the intro it makes the song alive when she sings with. A proud woman who puts her all into everything.
