alternate picking changes the sound of the pick attack on the strings. most people wont notice the difference because its small, but he needs to start alternate picking someday. you cant get away with downpick forever. btw nice cover

It's about 99% sure that guy playing Metallica solo cover will have suck-balls vibrato like this. Sorry, but if you can't make one single note sound good, you won't sound and decent no matter how many notes...
