I wonder if somebody could mix "Love Is Like Oxygen" in with "When Doves Cry" by Prince? Might not work, but hey! It's worth a try!

I can't lie, they do sound similar but it could be a coincidence. 4/4 time is very common.
To my ear, the songs sound like they're in similar keys but Sweet's song uses power chords and the Dazz Band uses some other (maybe suspended) chord and more muting for a slightly different rhythm. The Dazz Band is very musically talented and wouldn't necessarily need inspiration from another song to make a hit record.
With all that said, maybe the songs are similar but it isn't a complete rip-off.

Great comparison...not! The Dazz Band lays it down and they all got black spraypaint cans between their legs. Ahhh yeahhhh!!!!
