"Gook" refers ONLY to Koreans. It originally was coined during the Korean War. The Korean word for "Korea" is Hangook. Therein, the pejorative was born. It is used derisively to refer to Vietnamese; especially during the Vietnam War.

The Chinese were just trying to show the other countries they're worth talking to about space flight, how would you get a 2nd generation shuttle with no absolute evidence of you being awesome at building spacecraft.
