Romans 6 says "do not let sin reign." That's our responsibility. Even though the source of temptation is not our dirty, old self (that's the point!), we are still responsible to "not let sin reign" so that we don't obey "its lusts" (Rom 6:12). Notice to whom the lusts belong - sin. This is all the MORE reason to not let it reign. We are not made for it. With this view, we become more responsible for our choices as we are not slaves to sin and we can say "No" to it.

His understanding of Rom.7 is wrong. Paul isn't advocating a sinful lifestyle and then sweaping it under the rug declaring, "WHEN you sin, its not really you, its just the flesh", Paul continues his argument into Rom.8, "If you live according to the Flesh you will DIE, but IF by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live". John expected us to live HOLY as well leaving NO room for the Flesh, "IF you sin, you have an advocate w/ the Father", John isn't saying "WHEN you sin"

"Being myself" or being Like Christ there is a big difference. If we are in Christ then its a rather simple understanding that we would act and talk like Christ and not like the old self. The speaker is taking our liberty in Christ beyond the normal bounds of freedom from condemnation (Second Death) and including accountability. Repentance is needed until Glorification because we do stumble and must grow in our abhorance of Sin as we grow in our love for God and understanding of His Holiness

Psalm511 you said it perfectly--we must live out of who we are rather than striving to be something. Striving to be something will cause you to focus on yourself, rather than the life of Christ in you.

I wish you'd use more references to specific verses, Andrew though when you do I find you're right and paraphrasing clearly well. A good example would be of Ephesians 4:32's forgiveness paradox with what Jesus said.

We work from who we are not to be someone that we "ought" to be...It all boils down to identity and it is that that satan wants to deceive you into believing yet it is Christ who sets us free
