@FISHERGIRL343 Carps are a sister family ... understand why you might think along those lines, but the fish in this video is a chub.
We do have carps in this part of NC. Many (grass carps) are stocked in our lakes to hold down the vegetation in the water.

It could be a carp

@pever2772 It's a joy to be alive ... and to play a little bit in the sandbox of Mother Nature.

when uncle steve says "he doesn't know what he's doing" is like thoreau's "many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after". thanks steve, for reminding us of the beauty of fishing. and i "second" that tip about the chicken livers.

@greatwhite1222 I almost cringe when I eye-hook a fish ...
I've caught a lot of chubs (of the type here) and 80% of the time my hook point exits "safely" near one of the "nostrils" of upper jaw ... and the rest of the time through the low jaw. I use only Gamakatsu octopus circle hooks ... never larger than #2 and generally smaller when I am targeting chubs (as in this video).
What chub species do you have there? And what kind of hook and bait are you using?

@adamitshelanu i belive the type here is a creek chub but i need to do more research on that...they are quite big so i just use a #1 mustad octopus beaks but i have most of my eye hooking issues with #1 mustad regular J hooks....i dont set the hook either which is why im confused about why i get eye hooks so often...and when i hook a fish normally it usually set in the upper lip area..lip hooking happens about 50- 60% of the time

@greatwhite1222 In a recent video I pointed out his a small Gamakatsu octopus circle hook "nicks" the fish in its throat ... enough to catch it.
I'm going speculate ... a circle hook, because of the crooked point, might have less of a tendency to slip around in the mouth and penetrate sooner by nicking.
You are saying hook shape (circle vs J) is the critical factor. I would agree: I strongly dislike J hooks: too much leverage!
On hook breakage: Gamakatsu are very good.

@greatwhite1222 In case you haven't seen the video already.
GOOGLE this phrase including the quotes.
"Bream And Chubs Compete For The Worm"
Notice that bluegills try to be level with the bait they are going to bite and they come up and look at it, moving slowly and cautiously.
Chubs are speed demons, diving, spiraling from any angle to get the bait.
Think of the effect of a J hook on each type of fish once it is in their mouth.
BTW I really like fishing chubs.
