I was lucky to catch the Ati-atihan festival in Boracay last January 13, 2008. The island celebrates its version of the popular Philippine Mardi Gras festival a week earlier than the mother parade in Kalibo, Aklan.
The Ati-atihan festival is celebrated in honor of the Sto. Niño or the Child Jesus. This was originally a pagan festival commemorating the arrival of the Malay datus from Borneo to Panay Island. These datus bought the lowlands from the indigenous Ati tribes and the festival's noted soot-covered costumes are in honor of the Ati tribespeople.
Video notes: There's a disruptive passage of vehicles around the 1:00 mark. Also check the bell lyre, drum band starting at 2:00.
