This is the storm that produced record breaking hailstones and tornado-like winds near Winfield Kansas during the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival on the evening of Wednesday September 15th, 2010. I had been watching the storm cell on radar on my phone all afternoon and it looked as though it may miss us. We caught just the southern tip of it at the campgrounds. As the storm front got closer I grabbed my camera and shot video from our campsite until I felt it was unsafe for my camera to be outside. Video starts in the north, and I spin a few circles showing the sunny sky disappearing in the south. If the screen shakes a little bit it's because I was just a bit terrified. Hope to see more videos from other people posted soon!

  • I turned off the camera and we held down the easy-ups so they wouldn't fly into the river. Our plan was to jump in the 4 foot ravine next to camp if tornado activity showed up. Glad it never happened!

  • what a storm it was! the only thing i lost was my hat, i looked for it for the rest of the week, but never found it

  • @brodank Did you ever find your hat?

  • @theleglesslizard - We never found it, but i did buy another one almost exactly like it!

  • i was there on the west side, across the highway, and i was amazed at how fast it happened. We were eating dinner with some friends and it was just like a sudden gust of wind and then pouring rain... The scariest part was sitting in our car waiting it out because we couldn't go anywhere and then all the sudden all the lights went out, the street lights and the lights from the midway across the highway. definitely the scariest winfield experience ever in my 20 years...

  • This was so scary! It went from daylight to pitch black darkness in a matter of minutes!

  • The festival usually has rain but nothing like this. A scary and helpless feeling to be caught outside like this. Went up to Cincinnatti AR to check on her after the New Year's Eve tornado. Utter devastation. A tornado on New Year's Eve?

  • I was there and that was the first time I had been so scared. It came up so fast and furious. I had never experienced a Kansas tornado and wow. I was camped in a tent and my friends and I got out of town and went to Arkansas. I agree with benjomatic 600 was the scariest minutes in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • my first time in the midwest and I was caught in this!!! amazing

  • Some of my friends were here for this. Insane! This reminds me of one of the reasons that I left Kansas. I'm scared just watching this!

  • That was a really scary moment however the party after we all survived was flippin EPIC!!! Can't wait till next year---Lenny from TokenGrass (the black guy)
