A social experiment - this is my attempt at minimalism.
Philip Glass wrote a piece similar to this called Two Pages for his friend Steve Reich. I've studied both composers recently and love their work. Sorry if you find this boring and repetitive, but don't be so quick to dismiss it and try and get into the piece!
If you don't like it, I promise there will be "proper" songs on the way!

  • Keepin' it classy with MIDI instruments, I see. And it's not so much that it's boring and repetitive but more that it's exactly like Two Pages except obviously written by an amateur.

  • @ohlordbabyjesus Spot on! They are clearly pre-programmed sounds, because I unfortunately do not have an orchestra or an organ in my room. Wish I did though!

If you've studied "Two Pages" closely enough, you'll be able to tell that there are some similarities, but this is clearly not exactly the same. And well... I am an amateur, and I never composed anything "minimal" like this before. So thanks for your really useful criticism - I'll try and get a proper orchestra in my room for next time!

  • I loved the chords in the strings at the beginning - they were the typical "funk" song chord layout. They are very Reichian chords - Reich is one of the very few composers out there who is willing to use 7ths, 9ths, 11ths and 13ths. Fantastic job there on your part. The organ was a bit humph, really. And it really changes too much to be considered minimalist - on Reich's point of view anyway. It sounds a lot like Glass all around though. I take its inspiration was Music in 12 Parts? Great anyway

  • @amistrymister Well obviously the piece is based around 2 pages by Glass. The chordal idea was taken from Music for 18 Musicians, although I never really expanded on each chord like Reich does. I would've made the organ part better but, as sad as it sounds, people aren't willing to listen through 10-15 minutes of this sort of stuff, so I did change it rather quickly and ideally each organ bar would be repeated for longer. Thanks for your feedback!

  • it's really nice, even though i think it' heavily inspired by philip glass' two pages. and i like the organ sound ^^

  • is it weird that i watched all this again and read the comments and cried at what i said mr hamster sir

  • @thedeadlyhamster I would so listen to 20 minutes of this. But then I love Reich - my idol and fav composer. Thanks for the upload. And the chord progressions are rather too complex to be compared to Music for 18, but still very nice. :D
