On Wednesday, January 28, a funeral was held for Marvin Schur, the 93-year-old man who froze to death in his home in Bay City Michigan, after the municipal power company cut off electricity without telling him.

In addition to members of the family and friends of his, workers from the area were quite moved by his plight. They identified with the elderly worker and could see themselves and their loved ones facing the same danger. Several spoke with the World Socialist Web Site expressing deep sympathy, as well as disbelief and anger over his treatment by city officials.

  • I'd JAIL the person who turned off the power for 20 years.

  • It is terrible than a person died here, however a more complete review of the case clearly shows that he had the money to pay his electric and for whatever did not do so. This is really more to do with the elderly living at home with nobody to watch over them then a power company shutting off bills for non payment.

  • How messed up is that!

To survive 90+ year on this earth and to die like this.

They should be held accountable or at least policies should change to prevent this from ever happening again!

  • Marvin thought to put on layers of clothing and turn on his oven to try to get a little heat, so his nephew says he didn't have dementia. (I can't figure how his oven worked when his furnace and electricity were both off!) Anyway, Marvin was super frugal, and 93. I don't think you have to be demented to find yourself baffled by a world of technology that has passed you by. I really think that's all there was to it. But this death was totally preventable, and Bay City Power should be ashamed.

  • Im writing my letter tommorow to send to the AG.. BY HAND :)

  • How hard was it to check up on the man.. lay off the Zoloft...idiots.

  • This is criminal. The people of Michigan must not let this pass without someone going to jail and without changes being made.

  • These should be the conclusions of any investigations done on this mans DEATH.

FIRE the PERSON who's bright idea it was to use these ILLEGAL LIFE LIMITERS

FIRE the PERSON who OK'D it.

Get the Michigan Attorney General involved.

People arcoss the Nation and World DEMAND justice
