Plot Summary: "Charlie Wilson's War" is the true story of how a playboy congressman, a renegade CIA agent and a beautiful Houston socialite joined forces to lead the largest and most successful covert operation in history. Their efforts contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, with consequences that reverberate throughout the world today. Oscar® winners Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman team with Academy Award®-winning director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin to bring George Crile's best-selling book to the screen.

Charlie Wilson (Hanks) was a bachelor congressman from Texas who had a habit of showing up in hot tubs with strippers and cocaine. His "Good Time Charlie" exterior, however, masked an extraordinary mind, a deep sense of patriotism and a passion for the underdog, and in the early 1980s the underdog was Afghanistan—which had just been brutally invaded by the Russians.

Charlie's longtime friend and patron and sometime lover was Joanne Herring (Roberts), one of the wealthiest women in Texas and a virulent anti-communist. Believing the American response to the Russian invasion was anemic at best, she prods Charlie into doing more for the Mujahideen (Afghan freedom fighters).

Charlie's partner in this uphill endeavor is CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos (Hoffman), a blue-collar operative in a company of Ivy League blue bloods. Together, the three of them—Charlie, Joanne and Gust—travel the world to form unlikely alliances among the Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, arms dealers, law makers and a belly dancer.

Their success was remarkable. Funding for covert operations against the Soviets went from $5 million to $1 billion annually. The Red Army retreated out of Afghanistan. When asked how a group of peasants was able to deliver such a decisive blow to the army of a superpower, Pakistani President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq responded simply, "Charlie did it."

  • @majesticmaniac And to add to that, there was a 10 year gap between the Mujahideen defeating the Russians, and the attack on the World Trade Center... and done by 2 complete different people.

  • @majesticmaniac You know it helps to study the history behind this war, 1st is started off with the USSR rolling in to Afghanistan, then the "Mujahideen" wanted to retaliate, with the cold war still going on, the CIA managed to supply the mujahideen, with soviet weapons. The mujahideen are completely different to the Taliban and the al qaeda...

  • @z3rsk1 ....Agreed, and how do you explain, the million who died in iraq....

  • @majesticmaniac Normally, I wouldn't waste my time on unintelligible nonsense. Alas, somehow, your gargled tirade received a total of 33 thumbs up. Are you HONESTLY trying to equate the Russian occupation of Afghanistan to the American intervention in 2001? The United States ousted the Taliban. The Soviet Union created the conditions for the Taliban's rise to power. Oh, and it killed over a million Afghan civilians in the process. It was brutal expansionism, plain and simple. Read a bit.

  • @WinkyMaeve agreed

  • @BigBossInc no I don't think anyone argues that.

even Osama said that it wasn't the people in New Yorks fault for what is happening in the middle east.

but...the citizens are under the control of the federal government, when the federal government goes to war in random fucking countries all over the world IN THE NAME of the American people.

    they put us at risk.

if we listened to Ron Paul and stayed the fuck out of everyones business they would not give two shits about us

  • @majesticmaniac You forgot to mention the part where two 767s flew into the World Trade Center killing over 3,000 innocent civilians.

But to you, they were just pig headed Americans who deserved to die because a few politicians in office made a few bad decisions weren't they? Granted the world is full of Hypocrites, and there's plenty of them running things, but by condoning acts of evil where innocent lives are lost, you're no better than they are.
