The Sonic Fun House, 2009
Christine Duncan's Element Choir & Orchestra - Toronto, Canada
Sound Installation
Instead of wacky mirrors and moving floors, this funhouse will feature the human voice contorted into shapes and sounds never heard before, and musical instruments playing notes that could never be written down. The Sonic Fun House will celebrate the notion of "play" in contemporary music. How does musical improvisation play off conducted musical cues and to what extent can music become a "game" of chance encounter, intervention and discovery? Explore the joys of musical experimentation and use your voice in strange, unexpected ways - in public! This ear-bending experience will feature the all-Toronto talents of Christine Duncans Element Choir and Orchestra. In true "fun house" style, attendants will direct audience members through all the interconnected space within the Atrium. At the entrance off Dundas Street, visitors will be greeted by a video installation consisting of filmed footage of Christine Duncan giving hand cues to the Element Choir. At the next "station," Duncan's unique cue directions - both text and hand cues - will be reproduced and blown up onto large sheets and the audience will be encouraged to take part in a "memory game" to remember the cues before reaching the performance space.
