This is a very quick one take sketch of Barney's guitar part behind vocalist Julie London. This version comes from the wonderful album 'Julie is her name' - recorded in 1956. It's always been 'my favorite guitar intro' - BUT - the B7(#5) I play in the intro is 'wrong' - Barney played B7(b5).
I need to do this again on my archtop with an amp at some stage.

  • Hi

I have a lot of people asking for tabs etc on this arrangement - which is nice

I don't 'do' tabs- I always think - it's best to try and work it out yourself - you learn so much more that way (IMO)

BUT - I will do a short 'break down video' of how I played it,

give me a week or so

  • Wow, this is the best version I heard on youtube! I'm really impressed. :-) But could you please tell me the name of the opening chord? I play the F# (on the B-String) and the B (on the e-String) or the full Em9 Chord on the seventh fret, but it hasn't the "shinning dissonance" like your and Mr. Kessels version.

  • @HifiApartmentTV - thank you very much - it would have been so much better if I'd dragged out my archtop - rather than just use the acoustic which was standing next to my PC at the time - I will do it again,

I only did this for a 'girl singer friend' of mine to sing a long with.

I'll send you a message re: the chords etc

  • Great take on an all time classic

I am working on this and "I'm Glad There is You" from the same album.

Barney Kessel and Julie London - truly a combination that could not be improved on. I have heard Joe Pass with Ella but there is something more "electric" about this combo - maybe Barney's playing style at that time and Julie's voice - both young and hungry for success!

Look forward to more from you.

  • @joebarneywes - well, thank you for your nice comments. As I said - it was a quick '1' take attempt, I missed a few subtleties of Barney's (especially in the bridge section). I think it's the sound of her voice that is so magical - I think they used an RCA Ribbon microphone, and the compression on her voice is just 'wonderful' . PLUS - that chord!! that dissonant Eminor9th which just hits you straight up, know one had played that 'chord' out front like that before !!

  • Thanks!

    This one tortured me.

With your help, I'm gettin' it!

  • great video, thanks for posting - your hands look good, too. I don't suppose you have a tab of this lying around somewhere...

    greetings from brussels.

  • beautiful playing... we want more... it looks like this was your last posting from way back in June, please come back.

  • @amethystgtr102 How's it going, man.

I really like your cover and I was wondering if you could send me the chords for this too?

Be really grateful if you could.

    Thanks. :)

  • @amethystgtr102 you're welcome! that would be great, I learn this song for the same reason ('girl singer friend') :-) I got some chords, but the opening chord doesnt sound right in "my version". I really appreciate your help! thanks

  • Beautiful! Nice to see someone with the nerve to tackle the Kessel original. You play so well - hope to see more posts from you..
