  • I have to say that this is one of my favorite songs of all time. The Garry Owen connection was entirely lost on me before, but now that I see it for what it is, I say that it is as it should be.

My Grandfather was half-Cherokee, and his ancestors were victims on the Trail of Tears. Even to this day, it is something that we cannot speak of among family members because the shame and hatred is so strong. Some deny it, but I honor my grandfather's memory.

  • Benteen explained to the 1879 Court of Inquiry why he did what he did, and his reasoning is equally clear from subsequent remarks. He thought it impossible to obey; to do so would have been suicide. "We were at their hearths and homes," he said, referring to the Sioux, "their medicine was working well, and they were fighting for all the good God gives anyone to fight for."

    — Evan S. Connell in Son of the Morning Star, pg. 281, cited on the Wikipedia page for Frederick Benteen.

  • every word in this song is true about us indians every time i hear this song makes me cry bout all of them who suffered

  • This video should be put on TV. It moves me in my Spirit & make me wanna cry....but we're still here & will survive.

  • @nizhoni1616 Me too

  • umm i just broke into tears.....

  • I had to leave my best friends years and years ago. He was offended that Ulali used Gary Owen as the background to their song. I THOUGHT IT WAS PERFECT!!! We are still great friends, but just have a differing opinion on Native American music. This is a wonderful song and I am so glad you posted it! Way to go!!!

  • Well-said! Grateful for the truth in song and in the spoken Native word.
