Feli Flip of the Week #14- Muffling The Drums
Plenty of ways to get that ring out! Many diffferent types of sounds and examples.
Please write in with any more suggestions!
Thanks to all those clever drummers, producers, engineers, and techs that just couldn't take the ringing.

  • thanx this was better help than expertvillage will ever give

  • @MrMetalheadtildeath Thanks! Don't know them, but I appreciate you checking it out.

  • I did the tape thing but they still seems to ring, not as much but it still rings and it's not the way i want them to sound. any suggestions?

  • @yosesaurs Well, as far as getting the ring to minimize with tape, I have found that the more you place the tape away from the rim and closer to the center, the less the drumhead can ring. Also, if putting a lot of tape on the batter head isn't doing the job, try putting tape on the resonant head. There too, the closer to the center, the less the drumhead will ring.

The bigger question is, how DO you want your drums to sound?

  • I havo one for ya, there are window decorations available from hardware and "dollar stores" (Euro Shops in Ireland) they are basically flat sticky shapes like flowers or pinapples or whatever. My mother got hem on hollidays for about a dollar a pack and they are great cause u can cut those bad boys up all u want, depending on the sound u want. Great for snare and toms, especially under mics if they are ringing out.

  • @Thedosilemasses Those are a great idea and more cost effective than "Moon Gels", though those last a good while and can be cleaned, for a time, with soap and water. Evans drumheads also makes muffling products called "Mini EMADS" which are small dampening straps velcroed to the drum rim and a small piece of velcro on the drumhead to take out a bit of the ring. I put them on my toms when I get new drumheads and they last forever.

    Enjoy!

  • You also put a tape on yourself... then u'll sound better.... i couldn't hear u man...

  • Tape actually ruins the sound of the cymbal especially the avedis cymbals

  • i think you didn't mention the rings...sorry if you did,i didnt hear

  • Even Mike Portnoy uses tape, this must be the method!

  • @Musefan6732 Duct tape is get, but over time the glow can start to melt, so the tape will fall off and leave a glue residue that is tough to clean off. If you like the sound, I suggest you make sure to replace the tape periodically or at least tape it to the underside of the cymbal as that will keep both the unsightly look of glue residue hidden but also won't get stick to your sticks.

    Have fun!
