is the distro of Linux preinstalled on it capable of running regular desktop programs? I guess my initial reaction was, "what? it only does custom apps? how lame!" but that's probably not true.

It's not a desktop distro so some will work some wont..
These MIDs will have Midinux/Mobling/Ubuntu Mobile...
