I love the Futurama episode where the Planet Express ship is brought to life with a "female" program and Bender woos her by singing "Daisy". *grins* It's hilarious.

Thanks so much for posting this. I had heard of the connection to the earlier experiment involving "Daisy." Nice to have it confirmed.

I do think that Kubrick was probably also mindful of the symbolic value as well - the word daisy is a shortened version of "day's eye."

Eyes are very important in this film, from the leopard & early primates, to HAL, to Dave going through the star gate, to Dave's return to Earth as a giant fetus.

And the MR LANGLEY??? is that some reference to the CIA as in LANGLEY VIRGINIA headquarters of CIA???? or was there really a MR LANGLEY at IBM????

I think that's a GREAT interpretation!

After all, the cold war is the backdrop for this film.

Not why it was chosen, though, it stands for Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic Computer.

Note: a heuristic algorithm is an algorithm that is able to produce an acceptable solution to a problem in many practical scenarios.
