The quantity and quality of the silver lodes in what is today central and norhtern Guanajuato state led the spanish colonial authorities to make mining a top priority, as an enterprise with worldwide repercussions. This resulted in an increase in the granting of the status of reales de minas (mining districts established by royal decree). Around the entrances to these mines, towns sprouted up. The civil and religious buildings that were constructed are representative of the baroque period and are mexican mining's legacy to the Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
