Considering this was a year ago, I agree with both you guys.
I enjoyed the film and am curious as to where they are going with it.
TOS had many space-time episodes, but no one decided to alter time or continue with an altered time continuum in TOS- ever.
Other inconsistencies were...
Spock should have been a Lt. Commander at BEST in the film.
Checkov should have been about 11 years old.
Lt. Uhura was a cadet- promoted to a Lieutenant? How?
Great film but not a Star Trek film.

JJ Abrams, also, liked The Original Twilight Zone tv series because Rod Serling came out & gave you a back story on the character before the crap hit the fan.
Karl Urban is a huge Star Trek TOS fan.
I agree with you that this film was a terrible 'Star Trek film'. It's not about unity and overcoming human frailty to reach out to others.
Great film by itself, but not an homage to Star Trek TOS.
True, True & Very True Ryan!

Star Trek hasn't really been that great cinematically for 25+ years. Yeah, the effects have always been good, but they have always had something wrong with them. I as a Star Wars fan can empathize, I have seen my beloved Star Wars tarnish heavily for 13 years.

bought the DVD, some might ask why?
well to see detail(slow-mo) well when the captain leaves the bridge, gets into the turbo-lift IT IS GOING DOWN! the camera pans down, this would put him in the engine, the shuttle bay is above the level of the bridge of the kelvin!

Yep agree with this review. Okay action film. But there are no themes in this movie. The best Trek films dealt with issues and thoughts. Wrath Of Khan with aging and mortality and Country with a prejudice Kirk coping with a world where his lifelong enemies are now his allies. Great films. This one pretty to look at, but (for me anyway) no soul

what happened to Capt. Robert April?

I know that sucked. It was so unrealistic that I couldn't help but think, Oh geez the same factory set I've seen a zillion times. It in no way made you feel like you were in the Enterprise engine room. It seemed so thrown together, I really didn't like the movie, the storyline sucked and I as an original fan will just pretend it never happened.

Is't cheesy sometimes good? Thats what helped the origanal series a lot . Sometimes you just need a typical villian to hate. Stop bad mouthing a good film.

Man i am a serious Trekker constantly having to Star Trek against groups of lucas hounds who are my friends and this movie helped me so much. I love this movie and all my friebnds agreed it was a much better movie than Star Wars episode 3

Well the one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb, Was the fact that i could tell part of the movie was filmed in a brewery!!!! -- i known in a working Brewery etc. you are limited w/ what you can do
But come on!!
the "price scaners on the bridge" between the Helm and Nav "price check on the bridge" and other set dressing that was Bad very Bad the set 2.4 (out of ten)
acting 8 story 2 plot 2 this is action not Star Trek
out of curiosity, what was your thoughts on wrath of khan, considering you dont like killing, revenge, darkness etc

"Wrath of Khan" was about both life and death. The Genesis Project was entirely about creating life. Trying to create new worlds that could be used to help us study and learn about the evolution of life. Though Khan is obsessed with revenge, and Spock dies, the fact that they leave him on the Genesis planet at the end is to give him the opportunity to begin life again.

So, just a quick question (well maybe not THAT quick). You mentioned that you would give the movie a C+ or B- and you listed all these good things about the movie but nothing bad about the movie itself. You did list things that were not faithful to the original, but that shouldn't be a factor in making the rating adverage. So, other than the fact that it doesn't bring the same message as the other Star Treks, what else did you find problems with it that made it just your adverage movie?

A lot of the film felt like it was made to be a Vin Diesel movie or something (i.e. The Beastie Boys music, the muscle car, the constant breast shots, the cookie-cutter villain with tribal tattoos and trench coat.) It felt very much like you're average Hollywood action movie. I think that's what J.J. was going for though. It was made to give the audience something familiar (along with familiar characters.) It was more polished than creative for my tastes.
