  • the sound of the Gepard firing is incredible awesome.

  • Majku vam svabsku koja machina !

The GEPARD combat range limitation against ground targets results of the optical charakteristics. The actual device has only a 6 x magnification. No chance to encrease the effectivness in your mind. The planned implementation of a thermal weapon sight including a day-vision camera (modified PUMA optical device) could'nt be realised because of the abandonment of the GEPARD by the German army. But KMW offered this improvement during our GEPARD presentation in Brazil.

  • @Abteilix Oh and we are also experimenting on using oerlikons for a mobile land based coastal defence platform, the new round designed for those has basically the same principle as the seatarget round for our 130mm 130 53TK should give it an extra 15% range compared to normal rounds. Think they been working on the platform since 2005 or 2006

  • @Abteilix well thats a shame for clamping it down like that, since the oerlikon could easily go for ranges beyond 3500 meters. It is essentially the same gun, The modernization is basically similar to what we did for the 23mm sergei '67, heat and optical target acquisition with a modern fire control. But in a clear terrain with high enough magnification you should be able to hit the targets beyond 3500 meters, if you dont use the self detonating HE or tracers, Just takes some math.

GEPARD is not able to engage ground targets above 3500 meters. Thats true and shown in Brazil at 20 Oct 2011. As I understood you use the 35mm GDF. Tell me about the upgrade. Let's ask Fabian Ochsner about the real combat range. I will contact him if you agree.

  • Bundeswehr 4 ever :)

  • @Abteilix Modernized fire control and target acquisition in our oerlikons actually alloved us reliably engage ground targets between 3500-4500 meters. though not smaller than a regular sedan, preferably a truck or similar target. I find it hard to believe you cant do that with gepard or atleast a modernized gepard. But it all comes down to who uses the weapon and how :) It also boils down to the geography you use it in, which is propably why someone might think the range isnt that long

  • @mistbooster

Ok - you spook about the FAPDS. The round is like HVADS-T full metal, in discarding sabot but without tracer. It was developed for the GEPARD 1A2 to increase the combat range against A/C and rotary wing from 3800 on 5500 meters. Due to the lack of tracer and blasting charge it's extreme difficult to observe the impact point in more than 2000 meter distance. But engaging ground targets the impact observation is needed for correction in case of failed shot.
