What is a Mode?

Plot: Bernstein discusses scales, intervals, and tones, and analyzes several pieces, including Debussy's Fêtes, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, and music from the Kinks and the Beatles, to illustrate different modes. An excerpt from Bernstein's ballet Fancy Free is also performed.

  • 2:25 the typical Musicians Talk regulars expression when someone asks about modes on the forum.

  • When I was a young teen almost 15 years ago, this program was a major turning point for me musically. This was the first episode I ever saw, quite by accident, and I understood in less than an hour what I couldn't even visualize in years of learning music. I felt less alone, and I believed in myself as a musician more and more. Thank you for posting this.
