Emily Crockett, mezzo-soprano, with Matthew Larson, fortepiano, BU graduate recital.

Synopsis: Ariadne has just fled Crete with her new husband Theseus after betraying her family to help him defeat the Minotaur in the Labyrinth.
Ariadne awakes on the island of Naxos to find that Theseus is no longer sleeping beside her.
She wonders if he has gone to the hunt, and would prefer to be his "prey" herself.
She grows anxious at his continued absence...

Ariadne realizes she is talking to no one but Echo. Theseus does not hear her calls.
She climbs the highest cliff only to discover that she has been abandoned.
She despairs and rages...

Program notes: This cantata was a favorite of Haydn's, who despite being known as the Father of the Symphony and String Quartet also composed much for the voice. "Arianna" is a scena, or dramatic scene, with two recitative and two aria sections, composed for concert settings with keyboard. The keyboard is truly a second character. It evokes both Ariadne's thoughts and her environment: her sleepy rise to the dawn, the impartial wind and waves, her hope and unacknowledged anxiety, the high cliff she climbs, her emotional collapse and rage.
