Scout, worker, nurse and a female carpenter ants are filmed close up as they relocate a nest following heavy rain storms in Southeast region of the United States. Carpenter ants will many times get inside homes during this exodus and can cause damage if left untreated.

    Kind of. I record fast moving objects in a super high speed (500-1000 fps) and then slow up the play back frame rate to a more normal 30-60 fps. The end result for fast moving small actions, like those from an insect, is better suited for our purpose which is mostly educational.

  • This is not the best species to use as an ant farm. The carpenter ant colony can take up to 14 years to reach full size

  • I agree with not using this species for an ant farm. I actually filmed these ants in a backyard right after I found the activity. It was during a rainy period and I think the colony was mobilized to avoid the water.

  • Great vid!! I usually find the red and black Carpenter ants in stumps - they seem to like the more moist locations - I never find the black and red ones inside tho - not quite sure how they interact with the pure black ones yet. Any thoughts?
