I don't suppose anyone of consequence will see this, but the platform developers and actual users both *desperately* need Google to start busting skulls with the hardware maker and carrier leeches. Everyone wants it to be a completely free, hands-off process, but the whole experience is being systematically broken and devalued by the likes of Samsung and AT&T through intentional fragmentation, bloatware, etc.
On the outside chance anyone sees this... please, we're begging you, do something.

Would love to know why they won't reintroduce separate navigation and media volume, or even fix the current problem...

I have never at any time heard any user of any operating system say that they liked mtp. (Though I very often hear people complain about it.) This is not just an issue with Nexus devices. This is an issue with Jellybean. When your device gets Jellybean, you lose usb mass storage and are forced into mtp hell. Google needs to address this. But it sounds like they don't really care. This is one of those early signs that an OS is too successful in the market and needs a little humbling down.

Good to see something is being done about audio. I'm an audio engineer, obviously a very niche market for a phone but musicians are pretty widespread, one of the things that really makes me want to get the iphone 4s over an android smartphone is the fact it can run audio devices and apps with low latency. I know from some research it's quite obvious guys like iK multimedia really want to bring something cool like Amplitube to android but can't right now because of latency issues.
