safety. what risks will we take, for a safer system. I suggest that we put some price on our efforts (e.g. if we do 4 hours of work, shouldn't this be counted as worth "part of a life", e.g. 0.00001 of a life or whatever).

insights 17.4.2010. I had been thinking recently that if we have "performance based managers" controlling airlines, then they will be forced (in order to maintain their own income streams) to ask pilots to take slight risks. For example, if a trip is dealyed, and pilot need to complete the last leg when very tired, then we can save money on accommodation costs for passengers by asking them to fly the leg. But this could increase the chance of a crash exponentially, from 10^-6 to say 10^-4. The manager may be forced to make this decision because they will lose their own job unless they cut costs.

Eventually, when there is a new culture of lots of managers doing this, somebody will start to notice that planes are crashing at an unusually high rate.

I happened to be speaking to an air traffic manager today and he said parallel things.
