@katyu16 - No. You could not take the subway. I was a British Army officer in Berlin and I can tell you that the subways were closely guarded and watched by the Vopos for any escapers. Even in 1953, before the wall went up, the U-Bahn was closely watched by Vopos and Soviets. Westerners could get in or out but not East Berliners.

One of my favorite films, totally underrated and forgotten--overshadowed by the flashier 'Third Man'.. James Mason is SUPERB, as is the whole cast.

He could have easily taken the subway into West Berlin in 1953. That's a fact. My mother remembers Berlin well in the 50's.
