This is a 19T upgrade for a WRX. The turbo started making quite the awful racket on spool up, and was dumping smoke out the exhaust. Upon taking it out, I noticed large amounts of radial shaft play.
I had changed my CHRA in my gt2871r, and once reinstalled it I put on snap ring backwards and was not locked into place. Test drove it to get inspected and passed then got home and heard a slight rattling noise.
Popped hood there it was snap ring sitting on housing... The fins just knicked the housing took at all apart lightly sanded out flaws and threw it back together. I'm sure I lost a little efficiency but nothing major still a beast!
Some shaftplay is normal on Journal bearings, as the shaft is supposed to be spinning free in an oilfilm.. and that requires some clearance (shaftplay) in the bearings.
But when exessive shaftplay exist, combined with improper balancing and trubo scraping the housings... thats not ok :P
Important to mention that this turbo probably had som oil-feed issues, and that has worn down the bearings, creating this exessive shaftplay.
