On contour means perfectly level. A swale follows around the ridges and into the valleys as if it were a line on a contour/elevation map. It is definitely difficult to understand until you see one in action. These systems are truly amazing and necessary for quick and permanent repair of our landscapes into productive food systems.

great information .. everybody should see this video... especially w/ water, that seems be coming more scarce. Most of the world may be blue...but we depend on a green earth for survival. Obviously. The greener the better!

Look up Wikipedia: Contour_line :) What Lawton means by this is to create swells through the landscape that are at the same level/height, so they fill equally during rain, and then release the water equally into the ground. If you look at a water filled swell from far above, it looks like a small creek with 2 ends, Lawton recommends to have one or two passive overflows at the ends of the swell, so when they reach a certain level, the water is drained out without washing away the ground.
