  • I believe this was his 1964 visit to the US? I think in the 1966 visit his is doing it with the breathing. But I agree Isshinryu was never fancy. It is basic and direct to the point. Thank You Master Shimabuku for what you have given us.

  • This is Steve Armstrong's Tacoma Dojo. Tatsuo did not visit SA in 1964. There were several recordings made in 1966 and only one used for the 'official' film. Henk

  • @talon115 Six months ... wow, what a commitment.

Honestly, if you were a student for 6 months and repeatedly questioned "why are we doing this?", I'm not surprised you didn't last.

  • Thats my grandmaster right there!

  • @sweetfly66 Agreed. Sanchin kata is the foundation of Goju and should be practiced multiple times a day even at the highest level of training. Newer Goju students should have a solid sanchin kata before anything else.

  • @talon115 buddy are you joking .... six months is all you gave to this kata and this style ..... the okinawan masters say you should practice Sanchin for at least a year before you do anything else ... six months practice at anything will not yield any results ... your attention span is limited and your work ethic non existent

  • sanchin may not look to impressive but it is a hell of a work out and it helps you develop power in short punches(ex. one inch punch). the hole point of this kata is to keep the body tense and use proper breathing.

  • Its called muscle memory if you spend time on your katas the eventually it will become natural to you and you will use it when you fight. i am currently a yellow belt. i went through seisan kata so much that i can easy use techniques in the kata in a fight. it also helps if you imagine an opponent in front of you that way you can think of several ways the technique applies in a fight.

  • wow, unique, kind of like nai hanchi a nice short one

  • talon115,

Apparently you did not question them enough. Normally, if you don't like the answers you are getting, then you are asking the wrong questions. But I suppose in your case you just gave-up and tried something easier instead? There is a reason that spears were the most common weapon of the battlefield for so long, and now it is the AK-47. It's not because they are the best weapons, it's because only the elite can handle the good stuff. The rest just can't hack it.

    Have a nice life.

  • I've boxed, wrestled and been in Muay Thai. They all have strengths and things that can be learned no matter how experienced. I like Isshinryu because it is actually street practical. One of the reasons for this kata is to establish proper stance. There is so much more to kata than just the sum total moves. For one the final part of this kata involves grabbing the opponent's clothing, kicking the groin, followed by yanking him in closer as the opposite hand slams the face. Not bad.
