You can't fly because you have no flying troops. If you had all flying troops (like vampires) then you'd be able to.

Vampires can fly (as you described earlier in the game) so therefore since all your troops (just vampires) can fly, so can you on the map screen.

Excuse me, sir, the secret of flying over the map is to have no troops traveling with you other than dragons, and/or archmages, and/or demons, and/or vampires. You gave up 3 of the 4 by agreeing to that stipulation, you sap! I would let nobody talk me into that! And you should care about garrisoned castles, 'cuz then you'll have a place to lieave earthbound troops and go back for them. And, maybe you'll be pleased to hear, compared to myself I think you play a sloppy game!

Ok, ok, I played the game today (27/28 Sep 2010), and it's the first time that I've used a flying unit. It's great for exploring, but by the time you have the ability, you've explored most of the continents.
