To my knowledge, this is the first completely portable digital map built for tabletop roleplaying. I designed and built it using a short throw projector and less than $200 in materials. Visit http://www.rpgenome.com/digitalmap.html and learn how to build one for your own group. It enhances game play, and it is a big time saver for the DM. In the video we're playing a D&D RPGA adventure.

  • Thanks :) I should put up a video of the assembly and breakdown of the cube. Just 8 hand turned wingnuts secure the legs; remove those and the top slides off the legs, and the legs slide off the base. It's a 5 minute job to set up before a game, and a 5 minute job to break it down. It is a huge hit for our weekly game, and DMs have borrowed it often for RPGA open game nights.

  • holy crap that is cool. never thought of that.

Yeah, isntead of paint, use adobe flash. It'd be a peice of cake :) Awesome idea

  • Great post. I think you could make the frame out of a Meccano set, this would be a lot less hassle to a lot of people than playing with power tools and aluminium tubing.

  • even if you are using paint for this, you could put a video or some kind of animation to enhance the game, like flaming torches or sparkling gold, perhaps a moving river...and the DM can control these through the computer.

  • The video camera exposure is adjusting to the brightness of the projected map, making the room appear dark in the video. In reality the room was plenty bright enough to see the character sheets.

  • Not really what I would call portable, but still pretty cool.

  • That's pretty awesome.
