Hundreds of listeners have contacted BBC Radio 4 after newsreader Charlotte Green dissolved into giggles while reading a bulletin on Today.

She lost control after playing a clip of the oldest known recording of the human voice.

Presenter James Naughtie intervened as she struggled to tell listeners about the death of screenwriter Abby Mann.

"I'm afraid I just lost it, I was completely ambushed by the giggles," said Green.

Later on in the programme Green's fit of the giggles was repeated as presenter Ed Stourton remarked they had been besieged with calls begging them to play it again.

"Apparently the BBC press office is in meltdown with calls about it," he said.

  • @codingmasters actually, if you suffer from the 'giggles', it really hard to tell if you're laughing or crying, if you're only 'listening' to that person...happens a lot!!

  • it's a bit hard to tell if she's crying or laughing

  • @nullnvnvnv A colleague, off mic had just had said to Charlotte (Green) "sound's like a wasp trapped in a bottle to me" There is no disrespect for the dead or their innovation(s)! The Radio 4 team are pros and largely warm hearted which is why we regular listeners found this so touching.

For the shallow, nasty egos you imply try TV instead.

  • I would love to know what she was actually laughing at :L

  • This kind of laughter is so infectious. It always happens at the most embarrising times.

  • You could never fire Charlotte Green from Radio 4. She's almost an institution and to be honest I think she's got one of the sexiest voices on radio.

  • There is in existence another equally amusing clip of Miss Smith announcing the name of a soldier or political figure from Indonesia. Unfortunately his surname sounded exactly like a slang name for part of a lady,s anatomy.

This clip was at one time on Youtube & I can only assume it was withdrawn because it might offend some.

It is a pity because it is extremely funny.

  • I'm waiting for her "Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt" moment to come. It's only a matter of time.

  • @SM7864 she didnt :)
