'Virginia'.
Tom Barratt. Recorded, 1927.

For me the finest interpretation of this 1927 classic is the Regal record by Tom Barratt. Never pass one by when you see this wonderful old songster as you will not be dissapointed with the quality of Tom's voice and the Regal records themselves. This one was sandwiched in a box of dozens of L.Ps, coverless and surrounded by unlikely bedfellows such as Mahlers 5th symphony and the world of Paddy Roberts. I like to think I saved it from oblivion!.

Crafts Ltd! another long vanished local store on the roads of Kingston Upon Hull. Still standing in some isolated grandeur is the frontage of the Hessle Road branch complete with this same 'Crafts' typeface carved in stone high above the windows and stone pillars.

This is my first upload for many months as I don't seem to be able to find the time these days to upload or actually get on YT itself. However, the mood struck me and I made the effort. Do Enjoy.

  • Hi

As a boy I had and still do have Pinky and Porky singing this.

    Great song

  • Tom Barratt is one of my favourite vocalists. His solo records are few & far between and seem to date 1924-1931.

He was very much in demand as a dance band vocalist 1929-1933. He recorded with Debroy Somers, Percival Mackey and many others.

He seems in his element with this big hit of 1928 (not 1927).

It is a joy to hear and the fact that you saved it from an uncertain certain future, makes it all the more precious.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • It is staggering that a highly breakable item can somehow survive after 73 years.Tom Barratt made 100s of records yet l have never even seen a photo of him.Nice version, but not up to Arthur Roseberry's recording.l love the long hidden mysteries of the 1920s

  • I like this very much! Am I the only one who has never heard any version of "Virginia"?

  • I always liked this tune and never found a good version. this one is real late 1920's style.

  • Nice upload - never heard this version of "Virginia" before. Thanks for sharing!
