@arlosurgenor, there you call it clag. here in the us we call it soot... and thats why i love listening to environmentalists bitching about Black smoke... its friggin soot (clag) the shit falls right back to the ground. no harm no foul, glow plugs out of the picture, eventually the heat from the compression will ignite and will create more heat to help the next time it fires on that cyclinder. i just love proving ppl wrong that dont know shit about diesel engines... seems same to you.. enjoy..

@joha77johaa They don't have to, there is a governor override which British loco owners seem not to use.
-
absolutely excellent!! listen to all the green wankers worrying about smoke!! I was an engineer for northern ireland railways on the "thumpers" and the load tests were a hoot!! sometimes the adjacent motorway was enveloped in clag!! Once and for all 1. clag is unburnt diesel 2. glow plugs wud need a huge amount of power on such large engines. 3. no, you cant convert to gas 4. we dont want to change them, thats why we preserve them, because we love them, and the clag..........

many thanx to you ! Iam an engineer from Berlin. This cold - sound is in germany unknown.
We are heating up the engine cool-water above 60 Grad Celsius, start-up...and...thats all ! The engine runs immediately steadily :-) and 10 sec after start-up, you won´t see SMOKE ;-)
Greetings from Berlin

@joha77johaa It is called "hunting" The governor is not reacting quickly enough when cold to keep the speed steady so revs go up and down . It is not load-idle, just the no-load speed not constant.
-
please who can explain me, why the britan-diesel-engins after start-up are working frequently in load-idle-load-idle.??
in germany it is unable.
greetings from an engineer

are you sure it isn`t a steamer????

To be honest. It wouldn't be all that hard to implement an external heatsource to keep the oil even slightly warm whilst not in operation.
Like what those ice truckers do or something?

Yes it would, but who would pay for the electricity?
