Same Dynamics, New Directions: Centering Race, Class and Gender in Transformative Education
David Stovall, Assistant Professor of Policy Studies, University of Chicago

(Oct 17, 2008 at Dickinson College, Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues)

Discussion led by David Stovall, assistant Professor of policy studies in the College of Education and the Department of African Studies at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Why are many teacher training programs still reluctant to confront the complexities of race, class, and gender in k-12 education? The discussion identifies a process that prepares teachers for explicit investigations of race, class and gender. Within this discussion is a set of processes that colleges and universities can engage to begin an intentional commitment to transformative education.

  • This guy is something special...and CUTE too!!!!!!!!!

  • (23:00) This is how I teach! I always told my students that I'm there to empower them to think independently, not to dump facts into their minds for a test.

Maybe that's why I'm back in grad school, and only teaching part-time. LOL.

    (27:00-29:00) Don't sell out for a degree!

Know the difference between school and education.

My PhD process is painfully killing my soul in this institution. It's encouraging to see where I can be in 10 years, if I keep it real.
